From Planning to Writing!

 Kia Ora!

From last week to this week, my hub has been focusing on Explanation writing and we got to pick what to write about! While others wrote about the butterfly cycle, how to build a car and more I decided to write about the evolution of racism in  America. I focused on how many wrong decisions were made back then and how Racism is shown nowadays. I enjoyed writing about this because I wanted to show I felt about Racism myself but struggled with finding some information. In the end I am proud with what I have written and how it has turned out! Here is the link to my finished writingand this is the link to my writing plan!

How to find Fractions of whole numbers

 Kia Ora!

This week we were focusing on 'How to find Fractions of whole numbers' and had to explain how to do it for our create.  At the start I was a bit confused but after a while I got it. Here is the link to my original one!

The plan...

Welcome back!

After the holidays and I'm back with what I do for learning!
This week for writing, we had to fill out a planning template for next weeks writing.  We could write about anything we want but it has to be an explanation writing.
After thinking for a while, I decided to do mine about explaining what Racism is and why it's bad.  I wanted to do this topic because I think it's important and I think it's unfair how they are judged.

I enjoyed researching about this and learning more about this, but struggled to find vocab and language features to use in my writing.
Overall I think I did well in my planning and would love for some feedback!

We can BE multiple things!

 Kia Ora!

Last week and this week for Reading, we are focusing on what it's like to be in a community.  Even though I was sick on the first Workshop day, I looked at the benefits of being in a community  and the downfalls. For example:A benefit would be they have a a purpose or a goal to aim, and a disadvantage could be if people start to change their minds on the purpose of the group and start conflicts with the group.

On the First workshop we had to read all the texts and watch an inspiring video to get us ready for the create in a couple days. They were all about different ways of bonding or how they followed their goal with grit. For the create it was inspired by a beatitudes poem we read for R.E last week, we had to write a poem but every line had to start with the word "Be".

Like Be inspiring, Be helpful, etc. After writing my poem I decided to turn it into a poster and with the help of canva I made a rainbow inspired one.  I really enjoyed writing this and am proud of my finished product. The only things I really struggled with was trying to find better describing words and what theme my poster was going to be. Here is the link to my original one and below is a picture of my poster.

If you were in a community, what will your communities purpose be?

Recall conversions between decimals, fractions & percentages

 Morena!

For Week 9 maths, we were focusing on Recall conversions between decimals, fractions & percentages.  Basically, It's translating them to each other!

So 0.6=6/10 or 3/5=60%. For our Create task this week we had several choices to choose from like make a kahoot, create a maths game on scratch, a video explaining what the goal was or create a poster of how to do it! I chose the last option and defined it well I guess?

I struggled and found it easy at the same time.  I understand how to do it but it was pretty hard to define what to do. Either way, here is the Link for the original one and a picture is below. After reading this, is there anything I could of done better?

Toothpick sculpting=Geometry

 Hello everyone!

Maths this week was very creative! Art x maths how fun does that sound? Anyways this week we have been focusing on geometry and 3d shapes! Out of only toothpicks and blue tack we had to sculpt our way to create two 3d shapes. Even though It took a while to gather both of those items, I created two shapes and are going to say how many Vertices, faces and edges they have! (Sorry the pictures are blurry)

Square based pyramid

Faces:5

Edges:8

Vertices:5

Polyhedron

Faces:8

Edges:18

Vertices:12

If you had to build a 3d shape, which one would it be?

The Mystery activity..

 Bonjour everyone!

As I said in my last post, this week for Reading and Writing we are focusing on Instructions. Personally, I loved reading this week! Our goal was to learn when it was good to skim and scan and when it is good to read it  We got given four instructions to choose from BUT, we didn't know what the outcome would be..

I chose to do the one with a grassy background (Link Here). Here is the list of  the Mysterious Instructions..

Begin by finding a space with soft ground or outside on the grass

Bend down into a squat position

Put your feet a little wider than shoulder-width apart.

Put your hands between your legs, touching the ground.

Jump upward, and softly land back to the position you began in.

Try this again, but this time see how many you can do it in a row without stopping.

Try this another time but while jumping up, click your heels together.

This was so  fun and entertaining! In the end the instructions led me to do some frog kind of jumps.  I got tired really easily but these are fun and good for fitness on wet days. My high score was 19! Do you want to give it a try? What will your  score be?

The easiest treat recipe!

 Morena!

This week for Reading and Writing we are focusing on Instructions.  We were focusing on how to write good, understanding Instructions just by using under 100 words. I chose a recipe me and my brother had already did earlier this week. Corn flake  treats! (Even though me and my brother used rice krispies).  I enjoyed writing instructions for this recipe since its so easy! I think the only thing I really struggled with was taking photos with my Chromebook and having to write under 100 words, (I just fit with 99).  Here is a photo of my finished and here is the link to my original piece. :)

I really recommend this treat if you have a special occasion coming  or just need to make a  sweet treat. It's super easy and super quick as well! Would you like to try this recipe?

An investigation related to maths?

 Kia Ora!

Maths this week was focused on Statistical Investigation, ans mine was focused on the population in some places around New Zealand. A Statistical Investigation is something that shows data and reveals  its answer.  Using the data/information that we have gathered we had to make a graph that shows what we have found clearly. We also had to do two variables that also suited the information we have found. I have found four interesting facts when I finished. I figured out that:

  •   Auckland has more then triple the amount that Christchurch has
  • Christchurch has 343,993 more people then Nelson
  • Nelson has the least amount of people out of all the places
  • The most common amount of people in a large city is 400,000+

I think I struggled most with collecting  my data, but other then that I really enjoyed my finished project!
If there anything Incorrect or I need to work on please leave it in the comments.
Here is the Link for it and a picture down below:

Imagination is key!

 Hello!

Writing this week was focused on poetry and we could write about anything we could like! After a while of thinking coming up with many ideas I chose to write about an Imaginary city that I had in a dream! The type of poem I decided to do was a rhyming poem, and I love the ending that I came up with. I struggled with some words that rhyme with each other so I used the website rhyme zone to help me! Here is the link for my writing:Here

After reading it, is there anything I could Improve on?

Will it be a fantastic future?

 Morena!

For this week we were focusing on how important hobbies were to making us happy, we had multiple choices for what our finished project was gonna be:

  • A top 10 poster about "Hobbies for Happiness"

  • A how to guide for your favourite hobby (this could be a video)

  • Invent a new hobby - could it incorporate both the physical and creative side

  • Write an article of fun hobbies to try during lockdown - think about what we can do during lockdown and what we can't (get creative with what people have at their house)

  • A poster/video for the most popular hobby in 20 years from now...

I chose the last one and created a landscape poster using canva! Even though it only said one hobby I couldn't choose between two so I just wrote for both of them! The two ones I thought of was hover ball (a sport where you ride hover boards and can move with the ball but only for 5 seconds) and time travelling (this could be helpful to solve problems later in the future or in the past or present for us).

I chose this one because I enjoy using my imagination to create a creative outcome! I personally think that the only thing I troubled with was describing my hover ball idea. Here is my DLO:

I would love to get some feedback so if you have some leave it in the comments!

Do you have a growth mindset?

 Kia Ora Everyone!

For this week as you know New Zealand is Lockdown and that means distance learning.

We are continuing from last weeks task and are focusing on mindset. First what is mindset? Mindset is a way you think of things.  There are two know ones, a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. A fixed mindset is a person who doesn't take challenges and thinks inside of the box, while a growth mindset is when your willing to do challenges and new things.

We got given the task to complete a template based off one of the texts we got given. I chose the text about competitors helping or caring other competitors in the Olympics.  We had three templates to choose from and I chose template one meaning I have to pick an Important idea from the text and explain why it was important and how I have shown it. I loved writing about it especially about how I personally have shown it but struggled a bit about my grammar. Here is the link to the one as well as the picture below: Link

Even though this was a task this was not our task.
Our task was to write about a person who has shown grit or have proven that they have a growth mindset. I chose Bethany Hamilton, a surfer known for being attacked by a shark while surfing and losing an arm! But this didn't stop her from continuing to surf. I also explained what mindset was and what I have learnt after the text! I originally used canva to do it but moved it to google drawing for a better image.  Here is the link:Mindset

What mindset do you have?

Peace week is back!

 Olá!

This week was inner peace week and our hub had to colour in a peace symbol.  I decided to do the two finger hand sign to represent peace! We also had to find a story online that represents peace and I found one I really liked!

The story was about a king who wanted an exquisite piece of art that was peaceful for his castle so he started a competition across the land. Various famous artist entered but were surprised to find out the winning artwork. From a far the art looked like a 'anger storm' covered with red shades, but if you look closely you might notice the green bush with a mother dove taking care of her eggs.

I learnt from this story that you don't have to look peaceful to be peaceful, even if they appear to be furious.

Math Knowledge

 Hello!

Today I decided to do Multiplication for Math Knowledge! It didn't take that long since the questions were pretty easy. The only ones I really need to think about was the 9x, but otherwise It went pretty well. Sadly I lost the google sheet but I still have the questions and answers in my book!

8x7= 56 12x8= 96 4x5= 20 11x11= 121 5x9= 45 9x10= 90 12x5= 60 3x6= 18 3x12= 36 10x12= 120 5x5= 25 4x12= 48 4x8= 32 11x7= 77

There's science in happiness?

 Hello!

Term 3 has started again and so has the PBL question! For the next term we will be focusing on happiness! For the first lesson I learned about 'The Science of Happiness' which are the chemicals that cause happy emotions. They are Oxytocin-Love, Serotonin-Mood, Dopamine-Reward and Endorphins-Painkiller! We had to also list a few ways to make you more happy! I enjoyed learning this because I never had learnt about this before.

I think I struggled most with was listing 3 ways to increase your happiness because I don't know what my viewers and people surrounding me enjoy.  Here is a picture of my final project and Click here for the actual thing!

Revise, Rework, Repeat!

 Kia Ora everyone!

For the past couple of weeks, everyone in Kaupeka has been writing a Newspaper article about the crime that Goldilocks had committed. We had to include many different features in the text such as: Data, Interviews and even a interesting headline. This week we had to improve our first introduction paragraph. For my create I decided to add my 5 w's (what, when, who, why, where) to make the writing more interesting. Here is my create! Click here to see the original one! Is there anything I could improve on?

Kiwi Kids News review

 Hey everybody!

Reading this week was easy and entertaining! It was fun to read about different writing Genres and how different each one is. I read Four Genres: National, World, Odd stuff and sport. If you would like a look at where I got these articles Click here!

Here is what I thought of them!

National:

I loved reading this article since I have a interest in skiing myself and this could be useful for Kiwis all across the South Island.

I enjoyed the metaphors used in the text and loved the sentence:“Last week Canterbury’s Mt Hutt has opened its slopes for the season, after a new sprinkling of snow dusted the mountains.”

World:

Learning about this was pretty peculiar. The fact that China picks how much children to have is strange, but cool to learn about!

It was strange to see what life is like form across the world and the rules their country lives by!

Odd stuff:

This video was about a man who was confident enough to go swimming in Antarctica and the Arctic! It was so interesting while he talks about the risks about swimming in small tunnels between ice!

This man really cares about the environment and desperately wants to save these landscapes from climate change. He even holds a world record!

Sport:

The Olympics have always interested me and always have wanted to watch them in person. Sadly this year it seems like spectators are banned!

Many interesting facts are in this article and I overall was really focused on  this text!

The struggles of waking up...

 Hello everyone!

This weak for reading we had to write about something we do everyday. We got inspired by an amazing story Ms Newbould had wrote about Matariki! We had a limit of 100 words to write it and I chose waking up. I really enjoyed my piece of writing and was happy with my final product. Here it is:

Like a war zone, my body was battling to get out of my toasty blankets, surrounding me like a cocoon. Decisions went round and round in my head not knowing which one to choose. A bizarre sound occurred, “BEEP, BEEP, BEEP”. The urge to hit it off the side table was growing by every''BEEP”.  The scent of bacon and eggs had made it to my room, swirling around, luring me to creep out to the kitchen. I could see rays of sunlight peeking through my blinds as footsteps crept up the hallway. Oh no… Mum has arrived.

Is there anything I can work on?

How much maths knowledge can you take?

 Kia Ora!

This week our teachers were trying out something called "Maths knowledge". There are 4 goals that you can possibly do! I chose to do Know groupings of 10’s, 100’s & 1000's in 7 digit numbers and wrote down the answers in my book. Here are my questions-since every ones questions are different, and my working out: If I got one wrong please tell me!

How fun would this be?

 Hola!

This week for maths we were focusing on perimeter, area and volume of shapes. To know the perimeter of a shape, you add all the length of the sides together. For area you times the length by width, and for volume and all three numbers together. The task this week was pretty fun! We had to design a game for the Top team challenge (a day when you just do enjoyable activities). I designed game using water balloons and a hat (bucket drilled to a rectangle piece of wood with handles down the bottom so it can balance).  The team would be split into two sides one will be throwing and one will be catching. From a distance of each other, the throwing team will try throw three water balloons into the hat on the other side, if they get three in its a point. I used google drawing to display my learning. Click here to see it better and more clearly!

Would you like to play this game? Answer in the comments!

What if characters were alive?

 Konnichiwa!

This week for reading we were making a "Character Reading Web". You had to choose a book you are reading/read and write a little information about the characters you've selected. I chose the book Ickabog by JK Rowling, and have loved reading it so far. I decided to use google drawings to display my learning, and enjoyed writing a little blurb about the characters! The only struggles really were writing some information about some characters (Since I haven't read it all yet). While reading through my project, I would love for some feedback form everyone! If it's a bit to blurry Click here to see the original one!

That devastating day....

Morena!

It was so sad reading about the spill..reading about the ship crashing, leaking around 350 tonnes of oil being spilled into the ocean. The book was about how the locals cleaned up the mess, how far the oil had spread along the bay and how the marine life got damaged. So the task was simple, list 3 important ideas and say why. I did my DLO using Canva to make a poster listing them. Here is my work:Click Here!

Is there anything I need to work on?

Oh curious Christchurch!

Bonjour!

On the 20th of May my hub went for a trip around Christchurch,to get inspired and have ideas for our PBL project. This week,we had to write a recount for our fascinating trip! I enjoyed writing about my journey and what I found Interesting.  After reading this,Is their anything I need to improve on?

The 20th of may was the day Kaupeka and Tumu hub went to explore some areas around Christchurch to get inspiration for our PBL creations. I still remember the chants echoing from under the bridge, children were rowing, steering the waka down the river, as my group were exploring the fascinating playground, noticing things we didn’t notice before. It was weird realising that different areas represented different landscapes throughout Otautahi, from the Port hills to the Wetlands. Stories were told being engraved in cement, about how settlers came, and the wakas.

Time passed quickly and suddenly we were sitting on the waka going up and down the Avon river. Water was splashing everywhere as smiles and laughter came too. The wakas must have been carved by someone with amazing talent since it was a true piece of art. When we got down the river a bit we had a race with the year 8 group, we glided down the river with great speed! (we won of course). As we all rowed it soon got tiring so we all rested by lifting the paddles onto the waka sides. Sadly our time was up so we showed our gratitude by singing Tu tere mai nga iwi, and we wandered down to Victoria square.

The little park had many things to explore, from the fountain to the statues. We analyzed the playground and had some fun jumping into the sunset colored leaves, listening to the crunch. The maori pattern rectangles on the ground(looking kinda like rugs),13 in total all over Christchurh but only three in this expectational space. We sprinted around the place looking for tiny details to explain and tell the teacher. No clouds were in the sky as the sun peered through the different varieties of trees as my group dashed around stomping on the tiny nuts that were scattered all over the place. Katrina and I noticed the lights had patterns on them, each one unique with its own style. After having our lunch we had to go down the road to find ourselves standing in front of the Turanga library.

We were greeted by Ms Hendo as she explained the patterns on the outside of the colossal building. Describing the story of a whale out in sea. We walked inside to be amazed by the size and architecture of this magical library. Curious, the teachers gave us a couple questions to answer by looking through the discovery wall. This wall had many images from the citizens of Christchurch, all put together to create a technology  masterpiece, kinda looking like a stretched touchable TV. After having a little play around with the discovery wall we headed up the stairs a bit to find a lady standing next to a large cabinet. She explained how the cards had information on them, marked under letters or last names and how old they were. The cabinets were stacked with cards, each marked perfectly in the right spot. After a while she gave us all a sheet with different names on each. They had questions that we had to figure out. Mine was Sibylla Emily Maude,a nurse who cared so much about everyone. When our time was up on that activity,we explored some artifacts (from the construction site which got dug up) and had a riddle to figure out. We also looked in a room decorated with pictures and paintings of landmarks and people around Christchurch, teaching children about the native bush and wildlife. Before you know it our time was up,and we headed down to Margret Mahy to have a play before it was time to go...

The perfect place to stand!

Kia Ora!

This week we were learning about show not tell writing while describing a place we feel proud to stand. The difference between tell writing and show writing is simple. Tell writing is writing that includes no deeper language features, using basic words for describing and over all a pretty plain piece of writing. Show writing is using deeper language features such as similes, metaphors and alliteration.  Also in show writing the writer tends to replace words like "fun, pretty, run" to "enjoyable, stunning and sprint" so overall using more complicated words.

For my writing,I am describing Pounawea,a place I visit every year to meet up with some family members for New Years. (If you would like to know more click here!). For me, it was a bit challenging for trying not to tell, but I enjoyed thinking and describing this amazing place! So after some time here is my writing:

Exploring the same pebble road, welcomed by the seagulls squawking louder than a car's engine. Your Hills stand tall, like my ancestors, watching over your wavy blue blanket. The roots from your trees are like veins, drifting through the soil being the source of life, forming a wilderness playground. The rain pouring down, the stomping from gumboots, not knowing when the path will end. The Joy,Smiles and laughter sparks forgotten memories. Every year I return to my place,my place I’m proud to stand,as the ocean waves whisper “Turangawaewae”.

What could I improve?
I think I could improve on some lines and try to hook the reader a bit more. I would love to see some people saying what I could improve on so I can do better next time!

Counting Kākahi-Predicting

Morena!
This week we were focusing on making predictions.  Predicting is imagining or guessing whats going to happen next in the text by photos, Titles graphs, etc. We are reading the book Counting Kākahi, Kākahi is kind of like a mussel, Its a small creature living in a shell.
My predictions:
  • I  think the numbers are dropping because of people taking them too early and  their young and because the water might be polluted.

I got this prediction by how the narrator really cared for kākahi throughout the texts and the paragraph saying why the numbers are dropping.

  • I predict that they grow rings around themselves every couple of years so that people can tell how old they are.

My prediction was close since each year they grow a ring so you can see how old they are. I got clues for this by the photo  the right and some of the text.

  • I think that they moved down the river because they are looking for more food.

I got my hints from the graph and from skimming through the text. This sentence popped out to me  “there weren't many juveniles”. So that show i got this prediction.

Where do you make Predictions in every day life?

How do you make Maths fun?

 Kia Ora Everyone!

This week we have been focusing on Geometry and Measurement Transformations.
We have learnt different types such as:
- Reflection
- Rotation
- Translation
- Enlargement

My hub had to make a Koiwai  pattern using two of the Transformations from above. My pattern (from above) used Enlargement and reflection. I was very Interested in this weeks project and hope that we can use Maori in more of our learning.

What would your pattern look like?

A poem made to Inspire...

 Hello Everyone!
Today I will be sharing my poem about Ngai Tahu and our home, Otautahi.
A true place to call home
By:Olivia Walker

Wakas were sailed throughout the night,
Being guided by the stars, so bright.
They told stories about Te Waipounamu being their waka,
Bringing the sky to his lover.

Moas fled, kahu flew away,
Knowing they were going to become prey.
Otautahi was silent, nothing to be heard,
Except the Ngai Tahu watching the birds.

The Swamp covered throughout the land,
Where the Maori were proud, and had a stand.
Watching over their territory feeling amazed,
Seeing what they  had remarkably  raised.

Otautahi has changed over the years,
Bringing new places, even new careers.
New traditions, more places to explore,
So please listen for a little bit more.
Ngai Tahu were strong, like hundreds of brick walls,
Not giving up even if they fall.
Inspired by our ancestors we have a chance,

To listen to them, and follow their paths.

How different is the Christchurch Cathedral and the Sydney Opera house?

 G'day everybody!

Hello Everybody!
This Week we got given two goals to choose from, Make connections through texts by using more sophisticated texts or choose the goal think while reading, pick up new information, and come up with new ideas and new thinking.

I selected the first goal doing the task of a Venn diagram to see the similarities and differences to the Sydney Opera house and the Christchurch Cathedral.

Since the text is very small in the picture above here is what my project says:

Sydney Opera house
  • Located in Australia

  • Used for singing purposes

  • Has 1,056,006 tiles on roof

  • It’s a place where people perform

  • One of the most photographed places in the world

  • The roof resembles boat sails.

  • It’s 185m long

The Christchurch Cathedral

  • Located in  Christchurch, New Zealand

  • Got destroyed by the 2011 earthquakes

  • Still trying to re-build

  • Used for Catholics

  • Might be built again in 2025

  • Built in between 1864 and 1904

  • It’s a Church

Similarities

  • Both have their location in there names.

  • They both have some historical information.

  • Both landmarks

I used Google drawings to display my learning, and have learnt: That both landmarks have many differences, there is not much in common, and facts about both places!

Maths Week 8: Where do you think is your Turangawaewae?

Where do you think is your Turangawaewae?

For this week we were focusing on data and graphs. My main idea/question was "Where do you think is your Turangawaewae?". I asked multiple people in my hub for these results, the most common place was Christchurch, following by Other, third was Canada, and lastly a Other place in New zealand.

Using google sheets to make my graph and collected my data so I finally got my final answer. I used a stacked column chart to show my learning, I picked this graph because you can easily see the final results.
Where is your Turangawaewae?

Bored? I got a place for you to go! / Newspaper article

Bored? I got a place for you to go!

Photo taken by: Unknown

If you're looking for a place to go while you're visiting luxurious Christchurch, the  Botanic Gardens is at the top  of my recommendation list. Christchurch is known for its stunning gardens, so prepare to be mesmerised. Located in the central city, this garden has a range of sections to explore.

Rose gardens, water gardens, daffodil gardens and so much more including rivers and shops on the way. When taking your children to this wonderland there is a kids pool and an amazing playground (both still entertains me).  Hungry? Why not stop at the Ilex Cafe for expectational food and a gift shop to grab souvenirs to show off to family and friends. Have an artistic taste? Many fountains and sculptures are scattered around this elegant park.

Throughout the seasons different plants bloom, and some new animals come to play in the gardens. If you’re lucky, you might see a group of ducklings waddling around following their mother. Are you interested in tropical plants? Well they even have a room for that! Inside there is one plant unusual compared to all the others. Blooms every 7 to 12 years, amorphophallus titanum. Usually when plants bloom their fragrance is stunning, while the amorphophallus titanum smells like rotting meatloaf and rotten eggs combined. This plant recently bloomed early 2020,bringing large crowds to the gardens. Interested in Cacti? There is even a room full of different types for you!

So you get out of your boredom! Visit the Botanic Gardens! For a fun, sensational and worthy trip!

Whare Ako Maori / Reading project

My Reading project
This week we had to make/invent a structure to add to Christchurch. I have decided to make a Maori learning centre called Whare Ako Maori based to teach young children about Maori traditions and what they did so they get a head start.
What could I add to the google drawing and/or my project?

Olivia's Rescue Mission Onawe Pa!

Rescue Mission Onawe Pa

For this week, we were learning about coordinates. We are pretending that Onawe  Pa is under attack and Kaiapoi pa is trying to help. We had to measure on a map what would be the fastest route  to get there, Straight down, By waka or  by road route. Is there anything I'm missing?

The fastest route was straight down:

   56.1 km

The second fastest was the road route:

83 km

And last but not least the waka route:

 113 km

What are the coordinates of the Pa's?

Kaiapoi Pa= 74,05

Onawe Pa= 94,53

Compass Directions:

Otautahi to Onawe Pa: South East

Otautahi to Kaiapoi Pa: North North East

Week 6 Maths

My Pa
Perimeter: 134 m
Area: 1188 m2

For maths we had to design a pa. We had to make the pa to scale by doing the area and a perimeter. The image above was made via google drawing.

Inside my Pa is some huts to stay in, a vege garden and a Marae. Surrounded by a moat and a bridge to cross to their home.

I used google drawings for the picture above, mostly using the shapes coming with the website.  Katrina helped with the grass and with the pebbles welcoming you into the Pa.

Is there anything that I could inprove on?
